Application

Application procedure

Before you can study at the University of Stuttgart you have to take the following steps:

  • Submit an application to study at the University of Stuttgart (see below for deadlines and documents), including a confirmation letter of a professor of the University of Stuttgart that s/he is willing to advise you academically during your stay. You can find a list of addresses of institutes and professors here. 
  • Register at the University of Stuttgart on arrival in Stuttgart. 

Proficiency in German

Virtually all courses at the University of Stuttgart (except the Master's degree programs) are held in German. For this reason, students are expected to have a proficiency in German which corresponds to level C 1/ C 2 according to the European reference frame or to at least 800 hours (for 4 years) of coursework in German.

The University of Stuttgart does not offer German language courses to freemovers, but at the Office of International Affairs there is a list of private language schools available.

You must attach the following documents (certified copies, if possible):

  • a university entrance certificate or equivalent (eg. high school diploma)
  • a transcript of courses from your current university
  • confirmation letter of a professor of the University of Stuttgart that s/he is willing to supervise you academically and - should you not fulfil the German requirement of level C 1/C 2 - that s/he accepts your being exempted from this requirement
  • passport photo

 

Deadlines

  • 15 July    Submission of the original application papers Antrag auf Zulassung with the necessary documents if you wish to begin your studies in Stuttgart in the winter semester.
  • 15 January   Submission of the original application papers Antrag auf Zulassung with the necessary documents if you wish to begin your studies in Stuttgart in the summer semester.

 

Zulassungsbescheid (Letter of admission)

During the first two weeks in August (applications for winter semester) or the first two weeks in March (applications for summer semester) you will receive your letter of admission Zulassungsbescheid as well as a transfer form for the payment of the student services fee Studentenwerksbeitrag (EUR 116,85). This fee has to be paid by all students and is charged each semester. It is a general fee towards the cost of running the cafeterias and dormitories, including a contribution to the semester ticket for public transport and offers a number of other consulting services for students free of charge. Do not pay this fee Studentenwerksbeitrag until you have arrived in Stuttgart.

 

Einschreibung (Enrolment)

You must register in person when you arrive in Stuttgart. Please do not forget to bring your letter of admission Zulassungsbescheid which is required for the registration.
