Information about dormitories

Student dormitories are managed by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart (Student Services) and . Most of the dormitories, which are all mixed, are located on campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. They are easily reached by a 20 min ride on S-Bahn (commuter train) from downtown campus.

The single bedrooms are equipped with a table, bed, chair, wardrobe/closet and a bookshelf, some also include a sink. There is a common kitchen for all the members of an apartment or a floor. You must bring your own dishes with you or buy them in Germany. Shared toilets and showers are also located on each floor. Bed linen and coverlets can be purchased in the caretaker's office for EUR 65 at the dormitories run by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart and EUR 55 at dormitories facilitated by the Vereinigung Stuttgarter Studentenwohnheime e.V. All dorm rooms have internet access. For more information, please contact the Studierendenwerk or the Vereinigung Stuttgarter Studentenwohnheime e. V.

Room offer

If the dormitory you applied for is in the position to provide you with a room, you will be emailed a so called room offer at the latest three to four weeks prior to your moving-in date.

If you accept it, the next step is to transfer a certain amount of money in order to confirm the room rental. For a dormitory room at the Vereinigung Stuttgarter Studentenwohnheime e.V. you will need to pay the deposit of EUR 400. If you accept a room with the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart make sure to transfer the amount of EUR 700 to their account. This amount covers a EUR 400 deposit and EUR 300 as part of your first month’s rent. Please be sure to transfer the required amount before the deadline indicated in the room offer. Otherwise, your dorm room reservation will be cancelled.

Other housing options

Stuttgart is the city with the third highest rental prices in Germany. Therefore finding an affordable apartment or a room in Stuttgart can be very difficult. You may have to settle for a temporary accommodation before you can move into your own flat. You will have a better chance outside the city in the region of Stuttgart of finding a place to rent.

If you need a place to stay for just a few days you have the following options:

Hostels in Stuttgart

Please note that this list is merely a collection of links which do not represent recommendations by the University of Stuttgart.

Finding a place to live outside the city limits of Stuttgart may be considerably easier than within it. Those are regional newspapers that carry rental listings:

Consider a shared flat

Students usually rent rooms in shared apartments, so-called Wohngemeinschaften (WGs). These rooms are especially attractive since they are relatively cheap and offer the opportunity to meet other people. Each WG tenant has their own room. Kitchen, bathroom and toilet are shared by the flat mates.

If you apply for a room in a WG, you will usually be invited to an interview which allows the flat mates to choose the most compatible person.

Also helpful can be the City of Stuttgart's Welcome Center for tips on accommodation services websites where you can find room offers but also publish your “room wanted” ads. (The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart also offers a private accommodation service website)

Ads for WGs, as well as for other rooms and apartments can be found in print and online city newspapers like the Stuttgarter Zeitung [de].

Attention: Fraud alert!

Not all housing offers on the internet are genuine.
