Looking for private accommodation
It is not always easy to find reasonably priced private accommodation in Stuttgart.
You can find assistance here:
- Studentenwerk Stuttgart, Höhenstr. 10, Fellbach (U1 to Höhenstraße). In the department "Wohnen" there are offers from private individuals on display.
- Mensa II, Pfaffenwaldring 45, Stuttgart-Vaihingen. Find ads for private rooms in the entrance hall to the Mensa (open 9.00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)
- FaVeVe, both on the city centre campus (Heilbronner Str. 7, room 58/59) and Vaihingen campus (Pfaffenwaldring 57, "Hellblaues Nilpferd")
- Bulletin board in Keplerstr. 7, ground floor
Students usually rent rooms in Wohngemeinschaften, or WGs (shared apartments), furnished rooms as studios or whole apartments. You should expect a monthly rent
- for a single room: EUR 250 - 350
- for an apartment: EUR 350 - 500
Check if the extra costs = NK (heat, electricity, water, Hausmeister and garbage service) are included or not. Rooms in shared apartments (WGs) are especially attractive since they are relatively cheaper and automatically offer the opportunity to meet other people. Each WG tenant has his/her own room. Kitchen, bath room/shower/toilet are shared with the other flatmates.
Ads for WGs as well as other rooms and apartments can be found in the following newspapers. Also look out for flyers on campus:
- Sperrmüll is printed every Thursday morning and is available at all newspaper stands and gas stations. There is also an online version.
- Flohmarkt is printed Tuesday and Friday morning.(www.flohmarkt-verlag.de)
- Stuttgarter Wochenblatt (has the most classified ads) is delivered Thursday afternoons for free but can be bought Thursday mornings at newspaper stands.
- Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten have the same classified ads section. Ads for apartments are usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can get a copy the night before as of 9:00 p.m. in the printing center Stuttgart-Möhringen, Plieninger Str. 150. (Stuttgarter Zeitung, Stuttgarter Nachrichten)
- The Stuttgarter Stadtanzeiger also has an online version published for the Stuttgart edition and towns in the Stuttgart region (with EUR 10 per line a relatively cheap possibility to get your own ads published online and in the printed way).
- Websites such as www.wg-gesucht.de , www.studenten-wg.de and www.wg-welt.de
Here are some important abbreviations found in the ads:
| NK | (Nebenkosten) | Additional costs (Heat, electricity, water, building manager (Hausmeister), garbage) |
| ZKB | (Zimmer, Küche, Bad) oder (Zimmer, Küche, Balkon) |
Room, kitchen and bath or Room, kitchen and balcony |
| WG | Wohngemeinschaft | Shared apartment or flat with one or more roommates. |
| NR | Nichtraucher | Non-smoking |
| WM | Warmmiete | Heating costs are included in the rent. |
Make sure to take a good city map with a street index along on your hunt for accommodations. A day pass for the public transportation will also make things easier. Also make sure to check the date on ads and flyers.
In case you need extra time to look for a room or apartment, it is possible to find a place to stay through the Mitwohnzentralen (services which can be hired to help you find a room or apartment) in Stuttgart for a fee of about 20% of the monthly rent.
