Financing and scholarships

Proof of sufficient financial resources

The Universität Stuttgart does not offer financial aid. You must demonstrate that you have sufficient finances to cover your cost of living expenses for 12 months. At present, the German authorities require proof (savings book, confirmation of credit balance, proof of stipend or scholarship) of at least Euro 650 per month.

Scholarships

Students seeking a scholarship should inquire and apply first at a local or international funding agency in their home country, e.g. the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Scholarships offered by the DAAD are normally awarded to students with a first degree.

Application deadline is usually one year prior to the expected begin of studies and needs to be done in your home country. Check for information and application forms at the DAAD or the German consulate in your home country.

If you consider to apply at another German funding organisation you can check here for links or find addresses under  Begabtenförderungswerke  2011.pdf

Employment

Do not come to Germany expecting to be able to finance your whole studies by working. The study load is very high and because of the high rate of unemployment it is very difficult to find a part-time job. EU citizens from the “old” EU countries (members before 2004) are treated equally to Germans and can work without restrictions (in accordance with the German laws that apply). Students from all other countries will obtain a restricted work permit. For student assistants (Studentische Hilfskräfte/Hiwis) there is a special regulation: They are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week all through the year, a maximum of 90 days per year (or 180 half days).
