Public transport
Public transport in Stuttgart
Since public transport in the Stuttgart region is very good, it is not necessary to have a car. There is an extensive transport system with the S-Bahn, the U-Bahn, and buses. It takes about six minutes on foot to reach the city centre campus from the Hauptbahnhof or the stop called Stadtmitte. The S-Bahn stops in the middle of the Vaihingen campus. This stop is called Universität. It is ten minutes away from the Hauptbahnhof on the S1 heading for Herrenberg or the S2 and S3 heading for Filderstadt and Vaihingen or Flughafen/Messe. It takes about thirty minutes to get to the airport from the Hauptbahnhof.
Students who would like to use public transport and need a ticket have two options:
1. The basic ticket
The basic ticket is charged with the student services fee by the Studentenwerk and is included in your Studienausweis (student ID card) which enables you to use all public transport facilities after 6:00 p.m. on working days, and all day on weekends, everywhere within the transportation system of the Verkehrsverbund Stuttgart VVS (including Stuttgart, Böblingen, Ludwigsburg and Rems-Murr-Kreis)
2. Additional ticket: StudiTicket
If you need public transport before 6:00 p.m., you have to buy an additional ticket which is valid at any time of the day for the whole semester (6 months) everywhere within within the transportation system of the Verkehrsverbund Stuttgart VVS (including Stuttgart, Böblingen, Ludwigsburg and Rems-Murr-Kreis). At present it costs EUR 175,-. This ticket is recommended to students who have lectures in both the city centre and the Vaihingen campus.
Getting around in Germany
Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railing) has been advertising and offering some good options for travel in the past few years. You can get information at any train station or most travel agencies. You can buy train tickets at the counter or online.
TIP If you are planning to travel throughout Europe, the best choice for you is the InterRail-Ticket. This ticket allows you to travel four weeks anywhere in the countries you have chosen. The price depends on how many zones you choose.
You can find more information on the web pages of the Deutsche Bahn: http://www.bahn.de. You can also look up connections and timetables (choose Fahrplanauskunft and then Aktueller DB-Fahrplan). Another server that offers similar service for journeys starting from Stuttgart is VVS (Verkehrsverbund Stuttgart), home page: http://www.vvs.de.
Mitfahrzentralen
The Mitfahrzentralen are agencies that organize car pooling for long distance travels to destinations in Germany and abroad (Mitfahrgelegenheit = MFG). The cost for this lift arranging service is rather low. In addition the traveling guest pays the driver his part of the fuel costs. If you have a checking account in a German bank, you can book by telephone.
