Pre-departure Checklist

While still at home you should prepare and obtain:

  • A passport (valid for the entire period that you will be spending in Germany)
  • The letter of admission  (or confirmation of application) including a bank form for the student services fee and tuition fee - for further information please click here
  • Proof of financial resources
  • Visa for educational purposes or a visa for study applicants, not a tourist visa and not an au-pair visa!
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for EU citizens or proof of health insurance coverage.
  • Book of vaccination certificates, if you have one. Check at the German diplomatic missions whether you need any vaccinations.
  • An international driving license, if you plan to drive a car in Germany. In case you arrive by car, please note that an emissions sticker (Feinstaubplakette) is required for your car. Further information about the conditions and how to obtain an emissions sticker is available on the websites of Stadt Stuttgart (in German only) and TÜV Süd.
  • Recent passport photographs (at least 6)
  • For participation in the Welcoming Service, send your application form to the co-ordinator of the Welcoming Service at the Office of International Affairs as soon as possible.

Things to keep in mind before you leave:

  • Medicines you might regularly need, travellers‘ cheques, some cash for your arrival, a sleeping bag (bed linen and coverlets are not provided in the student dorms!), for all electrical appliances you will need a 220 Volt adaptor.
  • When planning your journey you should try to ensure that you do not arrive at the week-end because banks and public administrative offices are closed from Friday afternoon until Monday morning and you will not be able to move into your student residence. Shops usually shut about 6 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and they are closed all day Sundays.
