
This course deals with the development of art and architecture and surveys objects that are accessible in this region. It will provide students with an introduction to the development of art and architecture in the western world from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period. The course will focus on the characteristics of the period style. Examples will range from Romanesque churches to contemporary paintings. Regular excursions to collections, museums, local art galleries and sites are an integral part of the teaching concept.
Topics
- Characteristics and development of Romanesque and Gothic churches and monasteries in the context of medieval artwork and medieval towns that can be investigated in cities and towns around Stuttgart. Medieval painting and sculpture in the State Art Gallery and the region of Stuttgart. Philosophical implications and cultural movements of the medieval time.
- Baroque artwork in the context of cultural developments in this period. This can be studied in the region south of Stuttgart that is called Oberschwaben with its famous baroque cathedrals and towns.
- Neoclassical sculpture and painting in its relationship to classical architecture: sculptures of Dannecker that can be studied at various places in Stuttgart, paintings and graphical artwork that are collected by the Stuttgart State Art Gallery, numerous buildings in and around the city.
- Modern art and art since 1945: paintings, sculpture, design, and architecture. Paintings and sculptures of the 20th century can be studied in The State Art Gallery and The City Gallery, the two main museums of Stuttgart, as well as in distinguished local collections and galleries. Historical and political movements in Europe and its reflections in modern artwork. Developments in modern architecture can be studied in particular at the Weissenhof Colony whose architects have profoundly been influencing architecture all around the world until today.
